Free And Legal Samples (Extensive Database: 180+ Entries!)

Postby _controlfreak on Fri Sep 16, 2005 2:53 am

I'd go through and pick the best of the best, but 1) that's too subjective, and 2) it takes too long. Policies change periodically for some of these sites - please be sure you are allowed to use the samples in professional recordings (don't publish "Demo" sounds). If you encounter a link with questionable content, please let me know ASAP!

How are they allowing samples from movies in there? I thought that you couldn't use those types of samples without permission or licensing of some sort? There are some I'd love to use from Wave Central for some martial stuff i am wanting to do (war sounds/comments/etc...).

Thanks, but it was posted in September. It's a sticky, and that's all the attention it needs.

Just noticed this thread...

darkenedsoul wrote:How are they allowing samples from movies in there? I thought that you couldn't use those types of samples without permission or licensing of some sort?

Just because they're free, that doesn't that you can use them freely. Some samples are free for your own personal enjoyment in their current form. And some "free" samples are actually illegal hacks.

If the sample was posted by anybody other than the copyright holder, then you probably do NOT have permission to use the samples in your music/sound production.

There should probably be something to that affect in the first post.

You don't think that we should explain that some "free" samples are hacked?

(That IS what that poster was asking about.)

Ahh... I see. I myself do not remember which samples were at which sites, but if there's a URL that seems a little shady, let me know and I'll cut it out.

*phew* Almost 1 year later... better late than never!

ALL dead links & spam redirects busted as of 09/01/2006! :xmas: Thank you to lac1 for the help.

A lot of these are hosted on "free" servers; that's why their web leases expire so quickly. There are still numerous duplicate sites, but I can't think of a good way to hunt them down!

There are also several magazines that come with a DVD including sample software and a ton of free samples.

For example:

Music tech (http://www.musictechmag.co.uk )
Future Music (http://www.futuremusic.co.uk/ )
Computer Music (http://www.computermusic.co.uk/ )

I've had a lot of fun playing around with some of the samples.
Gear:Echo-Layla24, Cubase SX, Alesis QS6.1, Mackie 1604-VLZ, lots of rack stuff that's all blinkie, and neat looking...and guitars that go wheedly wheedly wheedly, weauuuuuuuh auuuurrrrrrghhhh.

here's a link full of links. I've checked out only a handfull of these, and some are good. Some day, when I need just the right sample, I'll spend more time browsing these sites.
