something around 300-400 with 8 inputs

The "right" audio intrerface for your studio depends on your CPU, OS, motherboard, and the robustness of its drivers. If we all put our heads together we might be able to deal with making a decision more intelligently. Use all advice given here at your own risk. Dollars or pounds?

The Alesis IO26 is the only FW interface in your price range: http://www.zzounds.com/a--3745/item--ALEIO26 FW is preferable to USB, especially with higher track counts, but there is the Tascam US1641 ( http://www.zzounds.com/item--TASUS1641 ). If you could find another $100 and go to $500 as your limit, there are many more options.

I use the Tascam US-1641 and love it. 8 pres, 6 line ins, midi. Track counts get high, CPU load does not, and I don't even have the proper computer for running this thing.

I 2nd that! I've been using the US-1641 for 2 months now. I've used all 8 pre's on it at once without any problems at all.. FANTASTIC unit for 400 bucks

I also say the FP10 good bet for the money.

Another one would be the EMU1212M with an ADAT expander like the Behringer ADA8000. You can always upgrade that late but it gets you 8 unit. Unfortunately the Dice II Chips in the Alesis and the FP10 make me scared to recommend them if you plan on using it with a random not built for audio pc.

You could take a chance on the fp10. Its being phased out. I think Presonus is having a buy back program for it???

Sorry I meant 4 inputs. Mic/Instrument

I am looking at

M-Audio Fast Track Ultra USB 2.0 Audio Interface

would that be a goer?

I think the Tascam 1641 is worth a try at its low price. Buy from a place with a return policy. Having extra inputs is a good thing that helps studios grow. http://www.zzounds.com/a--3745/item--TASUS1641
