Review and Discussion of Kore

excerpt from http://www.tweakheadz.com/reviews/review_of_kore.htm

Finally there is some relief in a product called Kore by Native Instruments. At first I was skeptical. I did not want to invest in it unless it could really do the job and above all, not crash in the middle of compositions. Early adopters were not a happy bunch. I was particularly wary of the claim that it could load 3rd party AU and VSTi virtual machines. But I have so much NI stuff, I figured it had to work with that.
To my surprise, Kore works here as advertised. I am already digging the benefits. The above pic shows all. There you see in a Kore performance 10 softsynths instantiated. I've has Kore for 3 days and it only crashed once, running inside Logic 7.2 on my Mac G5. And the product has delivered in two ways. 1. I have been able to find, audition and use sounds I would have never found using the Kore database. 2. I have been able to create new, incredibly big sounds by stacking softsynths in a rack. We are talking big, huge sounds here. Stack up an FM7 with a Pro 53 and listen--its amazing. For those of you who know how to program synths, working with Kore is to work with the most vast and complete synth one can imagine.

Just a note that Kore 1.1 was released yesterday. So far so good. You can now use it on two computers at the same time.

In other words, the hardware does NOT need to be connected to your PC to run Kore.

I've decided that these questions are not suitable here. It was basically a question on how the PC outperformed the MAC using Kore.

I think Kore works great. I was an early adopter, and i didn't really have any problems with it. I agree with Tweak, it's a great way to layer sounds. It makes me feel like i'm using a hardware workstation, in terms of putting together sounds into triton-style 'combis'. With version 1.1 most of the kinks are out, and with version 2 coming up for a small upgrade fee, i think this is a great deal. I run it in Sonar and standalone.

I don't mean to spoil the mood in here, but have any of you guys checked out the Native Instruments forums? Check out the KORE section.... its actually full of mostly negative feedbacks for KORE. I'm waiting for my copy of Komplete 4 + Kore in the post right now, and after reading some of those posts it did make me wonder if KORE is everything they say it is...

Me personally, don't think that NI deserve the negative criticism (musician guys especially seem to complain about KORE a lot). I'm waiting to see what will happen when I get Kore, Load up, update to KORE 2 and run things. But I generally have faith.

Kore is a product for people that know what it is and what they are doing. That said, NI tends to raise expectations with early product announcements, and release stuff with a lot of bugs. That just brews discontent. As months pass they nearly always sort things out. While it appears they are not listening, I believe they do listen very carefully.

This is a great time to get Komplete 4 as most of the synths have been updated to wring out the problems. For kore the software upgrade to V2 is still a few months away

Just started with Kore and up on 1.1. Very cool concept and can see it evolving.

There is a feature missing in Phatmatik pro which makes it unusable and I read users grumbling about it on this forum. But for now it seems that Kore has solved that. Let me explain...

I like to use Phatmatik Pro a lot both as a software instrument and is a quick sample editor to drag and drop to Logic or a soft sampler. There are issues with Phatmatik as a software instrument that were previously posted on this forum that mention that presets do not save well because there is no way to save the preset with the samples for that preset (as one can do in Kontakt). Therefore if the original samples that the phatmatik preset references are moved, the phatmatik preset will not load properly.

I did a test with Kore and loaded a Phatmatik instrument with mutliple samples and saved a Performance file with Kore. Then I moved all of the Phatmatik reference samples into the trash, and even deleted the files by emptying the trash, and closed and reloaded the Performance in Kore (that contains the Phatmatik instrument), and Kore still found all of the samples for that Phatmatik instrument.

I called to NI and asked them if they knew anything about the performance format and if it saves samples along with it, even for third-party instruments. The rep I spoke to did not know. Does anyone know how this works or if I am barking up the wrong tree. Does Kore save the corresponding samples for a particular preset you may have loaded into your soft sampler?

As I said, I have read some other users discussing this crippling aspect to Phatmatiks (its inability to save presets properly and the inability to relocate user created presets with samples). From what I can see this far, it looks like Kore has solved this issue, but I am not sure. Does anyone know anything about this topic?

that maybe true and they maybe paying attention. But thats really not the issue. Its the total lack of response or at lease the appearance of totally ignoring its customer base. That forum was suppose to be there to support their customers and their product. Which I have seen very little of. All you have to do go there and see all the unanswered posts. Hell I get more responses here than I do there. Again it maybe true that a few do not know how to utilize it. On the other hand it should be a great place to help people get past the newbies instead of leaving them hanging. Look at you and all the time and trouble you put into helping people out who are real new to this including me (I cant thank you enough) I deeply feel the lack of attention on their part speaks volumes about their product. IE bug release and then sit back and watch their customers complain enough to do something about it at another costly release. Ill close on a semi positive note. I love the sounds and the flexibility. But I totally hate the midi control aspects and presets.
