Complete newbie here!!!
Couple of weeks ago I purchased the m-audio Fast Track Ultra 8R to assist in recording my band. I want to get more involved with recordings as in the past I haven't been quite happy with the quality of the normal 10 hour deals for £250 that I have had from numerous studios in the area. Yes, well what can I expect for £250! Answered my own question there LOL!!!
Anyway, my band is a party cover band that does mostly weddings etc. Last Sat's wedding I took along the m-audio in an attempt the record the band. Gear level for this recording was:
m-audio Fast Track Ultra 8R
Mackie CFX20 Desk
Dell Latitude D630, 2 Gig of RAM, Duo Core 2Ghz Processor running Windows XP
Adobe Auditon 3 Software
I took out the direct outs from the first click of the Mackie's insert channels! I used all 8 channels on the m-audio in the following order:
1) Roland TD9-KX E-Kit (me)
2) Bass Guitar (DI'd)
3) Lead Guitar (Di'd) Line 6 Amp with built in POD technology
4) Roland Fantom G7 Keys
5) Korg Piano/Synth (don't know the model)
6) Vox (Keyboardist)
7) Lead Vox
In total I recodorded 2 hours which took up just over 10 gig on the drive. the m-audio was left on it's default settings.
The result was beyond my expectations, and despite the drums and keys in Mono, I was completly stunned at what was a faultless recording! The signal from the Mackie was plenty so no gain was used on the m-audio! Yes I need to learn how to mix this final recording but everything was there...no pops, skips, cracks ...nowt!!! The chap at the place where I got it from said that it wasn't a good idea to use all 8 channels as USB 2 cannot handle it...well last weeks attempt proved him wrong.
I'm quite looking forward to getting to grips with te technology and with Adobe Audition too. So I'll get back to reading the fundamentals in the guide on this site!
Cheers!
