LMFAO?!

Postby thegosine on Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:23 am

sup guys, i think me and my best friend want to pull some LMFAO antics and start some electronic music...
we were thinking:

Software:
Serato Scratch Live
Apple's Logic Pro

Hardware:
Rane SSL 1
Pioneer DJM 800
Pioneer CDJ1000MK3 (x2)
probably a sm58 for the mic
and i have some fostex headphones i could use...

essentially we'd use my recording studio during pre-production and make our own tracks.. and he'd get to mix them on the computer while i mess with mixer effects and scratch.. then we'd trade and i would go on logic and throw loops and start the "crunch" and he would mess with [deleted] on the mixer/TT, and then once the build up is complete, we'd just drop a huge beat kinda thing..

i think i have this down.. am i missing anything?

I would change out some of that gear.

MIXER
instead of the pio DJM 800 check out the Denon DN-x1700 - it is a way sweeter mixer then the pio, better effects and fully midi compatible

PLAYERS
I'd drop the CDJ1000's too... if you want cd tables for electronic music your way better with midi compatible ones. The cdjs are what? 5 years old? Older?
Instead go for Denon s3700's or pio CDJ-2000's. Both are midi compatible. There are some differences though. Pio are more user friendly and are club standards but the Denons are unreal for scratching (they use a direct drive, active turntable). research the forums on each they both have merits/demerits. But the lack of midi support on the 1000's will hamper your efforts imo.

HEADPHONES
Fostex? never heard of them. The Dj phone of choice is Sennheiser HD-25. Or if you like a more traditional build the pioneer hdj-2000's are very nice, comfy phones with fat neodymium magnets. They cost about 300$ though and i was concerned when I noted they are "made in china". Still I bought them and am very pleased with them. Whatever you choose you need to ensure that they have proper levels of noise isolation. This may not be a huge concern if your just doing studio based DJing work, but if you ever plan on hooking your rig up to blast a party or club or anything youll need the isolation to deal with the noise levels.

PORTABILITY
The cool thing about DJ gear is that you can design your entire studio to be mobile. I use a collapsible stand from Odessey, a Odessey coffin. My DAW is laptop based (be careful here), and my mixer and tables are all snug in my coffin. The DN-x1700 has a built in soundcard which (though very powerful with 32bit-DACs) may or may not be compatible with what your software... so you may require an external soundcard. Like if your running serato, ya youll need the rane soundcard... And some people like logic but I think the PRE-EMINENT DJ software of choice is ABLETON! The worlds top DJ's use it, except maybe TIesto.. not sure what he uses...
