I just ordered it, so maybe there will be two of us trying it out. I choose this upgrade over bass traps :o

5.1 is on the very close horizon (which is really the new release since 5.0 is really the last 4 update)

NDA ;) Let's say that the .1 releases are the "real" releases and the .0 releases are the previous version's last fix, but a paid for fix.

Personally i usually wait a month or three before upgrading to a new version of any software. I wish it weren't so, most companies use early adopters as 'beta' testers of sorts. They will surely iron out most all of the bugs, but it takes people reporting things that they didn't encounter during their in-house testing. The more people using it, with as many different systems as there are out there, the more info and/or bug reports they get, the faster they can fix the product. It simply isn't possible to test all of the different configurations of Hardware and Software, driver conflicts, ect.. until it's released to the public. This is true with most any software (not a bash on Cubase/Steinburg what-so-ever).

That said, i'm interested on what the Tweak-meister has to say on the new addition to 'the Lab'.

I did experiment with the new varaudio and pitchcorrect functions. Very cool stuff. Sort of a cross between Melodyne and my V-synth's "elastic audio". But nicer because it works like a midi editor, and can even export midi to other tracks. In fact, I wonder how many times I'll run to the v-synth for vocal FX now that this feature is so easy to get at. Hopefully will get to Loop mash this week.

Hey Rich- did you ever use 4 or did you just make the leap from SX3?
Didn't you run 3 on your PC?
Any feeling on XP vs. OSX performance? (I assume you're running this on the new beast...)

Personally, I'm not gonna bother upgrading until the OSX version goes 64 bit.
Regards,
Dave

Hi David,

I ran SX and SX3 and older versions of cubase on PCs, though i did try to get SX3 working on my G5. On the G5 performance was troublesome. The MIDI editor and in place editor felt like there was glue under the mouse pointer. Basically, a lot of graphics issues where the screen seem to lag behind real time. On the PC SX3 seemed fine I did use Cubase 4 AI on the same G5 and noted how snappy it was, so when I got the Mac Pro, 4AI followed where it was screaming fast. That is what led me to think it was time to go to v5. Whatever the problem was with SX3 its gone now.

Can you go into a little more detail about that, Rich? I notice the VariAudio isn't in the "Studio" version, only the full blown version, but the Pitch Shifting stuff is. Where does pitchcorrect fit between those two (I'm a little confused between the various bits of terminology!)

I'll also be quite curious to see how it runs on one of the new Mac Pro's considering this:

http://knowledgebase.steinberg.de/71_1.html

The same applies to the new Intel i7 ("Nehalem") processors that also feature Hyper-Threading. We are currently investigating using an Intel i7 on both PC systems and the latest Mac Pro models with HT enabled in conjunction with our sequencers. As long as our tests are still ongoing, we recommend turning off Hyper-Threading in the BIOS on PC systems. As this is not possible on the latest Mac Pro systems, we cannot recommend using those systems until further notice.

Dave

Well, I can tell you that Cubase 5 is not crash-free on my Mac. The biggest problem so far is that the East west "Play" libraries instantly crash Cubase on load. Other bugs are "typical" Steinberg bugs. Certain text is invisible in the MIDI device manager, defining custom instrument templates is very buggy, but when has it not been? I am thinking 5 years and they still haven't fixed these? Makes me think they are falling into the old trap of adding new features without fixing known problems, something Logic used to get into. I don't think any of these problems are Mac pro based. Some plugins are bad on the Mac pro. Kore 2--very poor, and I got the mac pro mainly to get enough power to use it. It only seems to use 1 core, which spikes to the roof with a heavy patch.

And hence the reason I rant about Steinberg. Putting a new suit on a pig does not make it any less a pig. Half finished features, old features left buggy, etc.

Of course with EWQL's Play - they say its SB, and SB says its EWQL and so nothing gets finished. from either company. Doug Rogers deletes threads left and right regarding Play bugs and has a habit of banning people from their forums for bringing up bugs. Same thing happens with Play in SX3 and C4 - load an instrument and the whole thing crashes! Glad I kept my Kontakt version.

Also, the 5.1 update (as well as the N4 update) with many of the bugs (from SX3 still!) being fixed and the new features has been delayed. SB has had some personnel changes in the past month. The Yamaha overlord handed the reigns back to Germany, and some people left, and some people took over positions that do not bode well for the applications.

Really looking forward to the extensive review of 5! I'm using Cubase 4 on 8 x 2.8 Mac Pro and it seems to have been crashing more and more lately so really considering upgrading soon but was gonna wait until the 5.1 update.

I have that same setup and have had 1 crash in a year and ~4 months of daily use.
