The ION and the Micron have the same synth engine. Just about anything you hear with a MicroKorg you can probably do with an ION.

That's what the knobs are for.....programming!

It will grow on you. I've had mine for over a year now and am still discovering new things with it. 8)

I assume this is your first hardware synth?

Access Virus user here :D

I'd recommend the virus synths for your needs

But then I really like the Roland JP-8080 and Waldorf MicroQ
Nord leads are pretty cool too

For trance or any other electronic music you cant go wrong with any of those

Micron is a similar engine, if not the same, as the ion. Virus is going to win in this field, but for under 400 the Micron could be a good friend.

Atmosphere can add some nice flavors to trance; Massive, Absynth, FM8 all great too if you have the horsepower.

You can buy a used Virus B within that budget, and get great sounds. You can program it easily, and also download lots of 'trancey' presets from teh Access website. You can also use V-Station, Massive, Z3ta+ in teh software dept. Those are teh ones i know anyway. I hear the JP8080 is great.

This a difficult question to answer for me but here goes:

My favourite synth to use for uplifting trance, prog house, or even prog breaks, is my Kawai K5000 (and I secretly suspect that one particular multi-patch from it was used in tiesto's track `dance for life' with maxi bass).

Its my favourite because it always has so much `presence' in a mix and I don't have to fiddle around with it to make it sound awesome. It just IS awesome. I also think it has the best resonant filter I've ever listened to (apparently it was factory error, for which kawai provided a `fix' lol. And lol)

But I also love it because, unlike my Juno 106 and my former JP8000, it has enough polyphony to play beautiful pads, whilst also acting as a sublime bass synth and providing incredible filtering (can do beats as well, if you want)

A close second choice is my Yamaha A5000, which I basically treat as a 128 note polyphonic synth with 6 outputs. Its just beautiful to listen to, and so powerful & flexible.

Softsynths all the way.

Here's what I use for trance

RGC Audio Z3ta+
NI Absynth
Big Tick Rhino 2

Plain and simple it's true any synth can be use for trance. However, many can sound thin also. Trance is about BIG super saws and stuff. That means lots of oscilators. The softsynths I listed have that power and sound fantastic!

I totally agree with you about NI absynth- its really amazing! I haven't used the other two. Can you recommend either of them (as being in the same calibre as absynth?)

Yes, I would say they are both in the same caliber as Absynth. Each have their unique strengths though. Z3ta+ is superb for bass particularly and decent at really most other stuff. Absynth can do everything pretty well but is better at atmospheric stuff and tripped out syncronized sounds because of it's amazing and complex envelope programing. Rhino2 is my newest softsynth and I'm still learning it but it has a little of both synths and is a great all round performer.
Happy music making!
