FMR RNP

1. Tell us how much you paid for the unit.
$640 CAN

2. How long have you had it?
Around 2 months I think.

3. Rate it on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being the best.
8

4. Things you like about it
It is very smooth and has some character that is very nice to my ears. I A/B'd my Mackie VLZ preamps with this RNP to myself singing and I noticed those two traits. The RNP is very nice for what I need. It delivers a clean signal that lifts the veil off of the signals I was getting from my Mackie and to greater extent my Behringer IMPs.
I actually like the way it looks. Many people don't but I'm a minimalist.

5. Things you don't like about it.
I HATE the 3 LED monitoring 'system'. I'd like to know the exact level of the signal coming from the preamp, so 3 little LEDs are useless. I have to use my sequencer to monitor levels, which can be a pain while I use the gain knob and have to reach my neck around to see what Sonar is telling me.
Another thing is the size. I'd love to be able to put it somewhere in my rack w/o buying another piece of equip from FunkLogic (who makes the FMR rack mounts).

6. Anything else you wish to add--for example, compare it to other similar gear, tell us your tips, sites with free patches, problems, list your website that has info specific to this piece, etc.
Not much to say other than it serves me very well so far. My customer base is not demanding and actually expects a lot less in relation to how much I charge. They think that a small project studio will turn out sounds similar to a radio-shack tape deck. The fact is that with decent monitors, a nice mic or two, and a great preamp, you can get a long way.

Would you say you are confident asking people for a sum of money, with your FMR as your main go to preamp?

Yea I would.
I don't have a gun to their heads and I always compare to other places in town.

The other places in town are in it for the money and it's painfully obvious. I've dealt with them before and it's the reason I started recording my own band myself. I felt like I could help the poor bands in town who went to these places only to be kicked out when their money ran out.

Good review Foo. I'd agree with pretty much everything in it. I also hate the 3 LED system, but as long as I watch my input in the software, it's fine.

The RNP hangs right along with my Great River pre at home and the API's, DAV's and others I use at work. It's just a different flavor. To be totally fair, the resolution is just a *tiny* bit lower than the really big boys...but man, it's like 1/10 the price. HUGE bang for the buck.

I can't hate the 3 LED thing... I just make sure the second one never lights up and all is well. More specifically, I get it to go on here and there and then dial it back 3 clicks.

Just like my MiniMe - As long as the bottom light is coming on, it's plenty.
