I have put together a list of some of the software links that have been mentioned in Studio Central threads. I hope this helps people to find the sequencing and/or editing software that they want... and I hope that they purchase and register thier software.

Steinberg Studio Case

Postby mcatalao on Thu Jul 15, 2004 3:58 am

Hi!

I think this is one of the cheapest ones since you get the most important functions from Cubase SX, with some limitations and a good set of well known VST instruments.

I already talked about this one on the forum.

Here in Portugal it costs around 279 €.

Get tips on:

ftp://ftp.pinnaclesys.com/Steinberg/dow ... tudioCase/

See you!

Wow

Doug,

These programs sound impressive & are ridiculously cheap! Do you have experience with them? How do you compare them with SX, Logic, P Tools, etc? I'm about to jump to SX, but you kind of stopped me in my tracks! I work with others using P Tools & Logic from my home studio. I like the idea of a small kick ass company hsowing up the big guys too.

I have played around with n-Track and Tracktion. Neither one has the power of professional programs like Pro Tools.

n-Track is very easy to set up and very easy to use. It searched and loaded ALL of my plug-ins, and it ran extremely well. It doesn't have all of the features of Sonar, but has everything you need to get started. I think it is a GREAT program for people who have never done any recording/mixing on their computer.

I wasn't crazy about Tracktion, and I don't think it's as user-friendly as most of the other programs that are out there. However, that could change in the future as Mackie invests their efforts into making it work better with their controllers and mixers. I would keep my eye on this one.

Wow, my experience with Tracktion is exactly opposite--I was completely gassed by the everything-on-one-screen drag-n-drop workflow, and so I purchased it within 30 minutes of installing the demo. Lack of modal dialogs is like the BEST thing, IMO. Granted MIDI editing is lame tho. T2 will likely have much better MIDI editing (I hope).

Tracktion has a cohesive and well-thought-out design because it is the product of one very talented programmer, Jules Storer. And besides the fact that Tracktion is fast, stable, and easy to use, I have seen the operative code that it's built on--Jules just released his 100k-lines of JUCE foundation classes under GPL. As a professional real-time embedded software developer myself, I can see why it rocks so hard....very little Win32 bloat..

I suppose if I were a hot-shot pro in some high-pressure studio, sure, I'd be willing to ante up $$$$ for pro tools or whatever. But it's just me and my laptop in my little bedroom studio. Power to the little guy!

Be aware that Sound Diver is the full app, and it will not work if you don't own an XSkey USB dingle. And it's mac-only

wow, really late here, but Buzz does do DX. I believe Polac's VSTi loader does DX in addition to VST and VSTi. Adapters -> VST Instruments (it'll say something about "no adapter loaded" or something at the end of the menu chain...just click it, it will load the machine)

You may need v1.19 thought. Buzz downloads with 1.13.

MAGIX Music Studio 10-MIDI Studio is based on Logic and can open Logic project files well (I use it) and has 24bit support.

Audio Studio is similar to the more expensive Samplitude :

It's a recent release too.
Cost:$79.99

I am surprised there has been no mention of Orion and FL Studio. I would certainly like to hear opinions of each.

Been using Mannikin a lot; it's real good for constructing the actual beat and then you can record it with your traditional seq.
