Looking for software

Electronic drums are here to stay. The original TR808/909 drum boxes are now scarce. Lets talk about triggers, wiring your e-kit, creative options for the electronic drummer

Looking for software

Postby Tuckejam on Mon Aug 15, 2005 11:32 am

Im trying to find software that will let me create or build and individual beat or drum sound from scratch does any one know if there is any software made for this.

I have seen and used multiple loop createing software and and have manipulated an existing beat with soundforge but never sceen anything that lets you build one from the ground up

Check out native instruments' "battery." All you need to create a loop from the ground up is a sequencer, or a pattern / drum machine. These can be found within FL and Reason... though I'm sure that would be overkill for you. It depends on how you want to create your loop too. Are you wanting to lay down the patterns on the computer, and have it trigger sounds from an external sound module? Or are you wanting to trigger samples that are stored within your computer?

not the loop just the beat

Postby Tuckejam on Mon Aug 15, 2005 12:45 pm

i just want something that will let me generate the individual beat (or sample in wave format) and let me manipulate the wave pattern to the specific soud im after. then i could use the beat in a loop

I would go for Specrasonics Stylus RMX or just wav samples from CDs!

>manipulate the wave pattern to the specific

That's really not how these things work. If you mean MIDI note pattern, then Battery lets you access hits from the grids on your sequencer. Stylus RMX lets you do this and you have additional methods. See my review at the reviews link in the header.

Both are great. If you are more into hip hop beats, I suggest RMX.

My advice:

Go for RMX, this is truly a multi layering program like Culture...
Forget all about Battery, this has weak onboard sounds, and doesn´t do a good job with anything, a useless program if you ask me...

Disagree in part. Battery lets you load any sound you want. You can layer and use multiple outputs. "onboard" sounds? You mean supplied samples and kits? Yeah, they are not the greatest (I have Battery I), but the fun comes in when you mix and match and load your other samples.

Culture has a limited set of beautiful onboard samples and these are onboard and you can't load anything into it. But its not what I call easy to use and its very easy to crash the thing.

RMX is great. Get some of the sage expanders and its greater.

Yeah, I was to critical towards Battery 2..sorry..
RMX is great, but when it comes to pure and distinct sound, I would choose Yellow Tools Culture any day, the best sounding percussion softsynth I have ever heard in my life, and I have never experienced problems with it, but it is not too straight forward though, takes time to really master and use to its best potensial, but I tell you, the potensial is absolutely present, believe me on that!!

Yes, all of thouse, and it is a special percussion softsynth with amazing timbre, 8 layers, and the program comes with a sound library of 9 GB!
It´s a little pricy, but not when you hear its quality, then the price is forgiving...
This is a details kind of program, not axactly the very first softsynth you will get, but if you appreciate special percussion and layered sound of drums, this is a true investment for sure, the very best!!
