well... im not a pro or nuthin but i thought id just point out that you have the AKG precep 100 on your list. you should upgrade it to at least the 200.. there's difference in the quality. but hey what do i know.. im just a newb round these parts. and just to let you know im probobly going to buy the AKG 200 or the Studio Project C-1.. those are my choices so far. øat least for the budget im working with anyway. as far as all the other mics i couldnt tell you becasue i have no knowledge on em. hopefully someone else will drop there two cents in... anyway peace

EV RE-20 (I know it's not on the list for some strange reason).

In any case, the preamp is going to make a rather drastic difference also...

If you're using the preamps built into the Phonic, I'd scratch the idea of getting a nice mic and get a decent preamp and an "okay" mic. It'll make a MUCH bigger difference in the sound than using those pres.

There is no mic that's best for the Phonic's preamps. A mic will only sound as good as the preamp allows it to. The single greatest microphone in the world will not sound good through those preamps. On the flipside, a 57 can sound amazingly decent through a nice preamp.

That all being said - A "Trusted set of ears" recently told me he thought the 2020 was "pretty decent for the cash" - That's saying a lot.

Still, the mic is going to be squelched by the preamp. You're not going to hear the "open, airy, focused" quality you're hoping to. Plug it into a Grace - Even a DMP3 - and you probably will.

I am also looking for advice on a new mic for hip-hop/ rap vocals, I will be recording through a Yamaha AW1600.

I heard the SM57 and/or a Studio projects B1 mics would be a good choice?

Any advice would be very apreciated!

I'm no expert, nor have I really tested many mics, but I have the Studio Projects C1 for hip hop vocals and I love it. It's taken me awhile, but I've finally found the right mic placement and it's made all the difference. The C1 is extremely crisp and clear on all the vocals I've used it on, but I have yet to try it on female vocals yet (I hear it's not the best on females). I know the C1 is about $100 more than the B1, but eBay has some great deals. Hope my two cents helps.

I saw that you have the MXL 770 on your list, which I believe is the same mic my friend uses. I have a song he recorded with it that sounds pretty good. If you want me to send it to you just let me know.

Album Sampler - Forbidden Dream
(From their album - Slightly Out of Frame, recorded at Blue Bear Sound)

The lead vocals on this album were done primarily with a C1... (why use that one? because that's the mic that best-suited the singer's voice -- after going thru a number of other mics I reach for first, it was the C1 worked in his case.)

"What is this 'calibrated' you speak of, sir - is this some sort of plug-in? Can I download it somewhere???"
