Review of the Sennheiser MD421-II

Lets get serious. You can with this mic. My first test run with the mic left me quite pleased. I tried nylon acoustic guitar and really liked the tone on chords and solo. Lots of hi frequencies came through cleanly. No surprise, this dynamic is rated to go as high as 17kHz (compared to 16 kHz on the immortal SM57)...

A TEN DB BOOST FROM 1-10K???

I can't wait to hear clips! If I were looking at a freq. response curve and saw that, I'd be as appaled at it as Noobly was at the apperance of the MD. Wow. I'm actually in the market for a good dynamic for spoken word and guitar cabs - I was pretty set on the RE20, but now a review of this mic shows up too!

How do you think the two mics compare? Obviously the MD is going to have a lot more treble; but for the applications of guitar cabs and spoken word, what is your opinion (i'm well aware that a comparison like this is very subjective)?

Thanks so much for the review of both mics!

I got that figure interpreting the graph that came with the mic. It looks like a test readout of this specific mic, as the serial number is on it. I'll scan it and let you be the judge.

It does not sound overly bright though. Less than the RE20 which tops off at 18kHz, but is relatively flat. So far I prefer the RE20 for voice. It has a classic signature. We've all heard RE20s before on radio and TV and when you hear your own voice through one, it strikes a subliminal chord. At least for me. :)

That seems to be the truth from everything I've read and heard thus far! I think I'll stick with my instincts on this one and go with the EV.

I've been using an MD421 on tenor sax (it's a classic sax mic) and love it.

Been experimenting lately with an MD421 with a M-Audio Solaris (which I see you also reviewed favorably) in a Mid/Side setup and am really excited about the sound I've been getting.

I'm not a singer, but both make really good horn mics....

Cool. If you get a chance tell us how you set that up, position wise. Do you rolloff the bass on both mics?
