Z plane filters...

How does one sculpt the sound of a world class piece of music? What sounds fresh today, and how do we get that sound in our mix?

Z plane filters...

Postby Rekky on Thu Oct 19, 2006 2:17 am

I'm interested in Z-plane filters.. it seems like they are more accurate than normal filters for processing sound.

What are they like for processing bass?

Also, what's the cheapest way to get my hands on some Z-plane filters? Do I have to get a hardware module, or are software Z-plane filters equally as good?

Since nobody answered ... maybe you should ask ... Herve Villachaize ... "Boss, Ze Plane! Ze Plane!" ...

Emu came up with Z-plane filters on their hardware samplers and synths. They were best implemented in a synth called the Morpheus. After the Morpheus was discontinued, they put "watered down" versions in their samplers and ultimately in the Proteus 2000 series. Now the only z-plane filters I know of are in their Emulator X2 and Proteus X2 software.

For a similar, but i think better, alternative to what Z-plane does, check out the new soft synth Massive by NI. If there ever was a synth programmers could love, this is one.

^I was elated when I saw that Komplete 4 had arrived at the lab. Then my hopes were dashed when I read that Massive is not included in K4. Really looking forward to what people have to say about this one. I will be beside myself if someone says, "Now you don't need to buy a Virus for a wicked fat sound!"

NI has a bundle deal going if you get Kore and Komplete 4 they will let you download Massive for free. The deal holds if you just Upgrade your existing Komplete and get Kore. That's how I got it. And they made us wait; I just received the email "Massive is ready for download" two days ago.

A Virus Killer? In some ways it certainly is. The sheer width and depth of the sonic universe for Massive exceeds the Virus, though it may not be able to capture that idiosyncratic "white black and grey" virus aggressive sound. And its software, so CPU limits definitely come into play. But it can be extreme, and can also be pure and cold.

He wouldn't agree to be stuck in there anyway; no bass traps in the corners of the package. Besides, he's on the up and up as far as technology goes. After all:

I'm sure he insisted on only the best converters to A/D himself.
