USB problems??

Postby doogiehowser on Wed Jan 10, 2007 9:32 pm

I got an Asus p5b deluxe motherboard which has USB 2.0 ports on it, but everytime I connect a flash drive to it, a little window pops up in windows xp telling me 'This device can perform faster if you connect it to a High Speed USB 2.0 port'. Then once I click on that, a box comes up telling me "There are no HI-Speed USB host controllers installed on this computer".

what the hell?? but its supposed to be usb 2.0??? why is this poppin up? My brother has the exact same setup as me, and he does not experience this same problem when connecting a flash drive...

Theres probably a jumper on the motherboard that switches between 1.1 and 2.0

Look for a pdf manual of your motherboard online, youll have a bit of reading to do, but its worth it to shut up windows.

are you running XP? is it service pack 2? look under system properties go into device manager, and see if there is any /!\ unknown device flags on anything in the USB controllers section...

anything less than SP2 doesn't have drivers for USB 2.0

No, i meant the jumpers on the motherboards can switch between 1.1 and 2.0.

You have to find them and mannually switch them.

are u saying i have to replace the jumper that connects from the motherboard to the front of the case USB port?? (that jumper came with my antec solo case btw).

can you go into detail more about this 'jumper that needs to be manually switched?' please excuse my ignorance.

I have the same problem even if i plug in my USB device into the back of the motherboard, (where there are no jumpers). the damm little box pops up still.

in any event, i have never heard of this.

are there any tests i can run on my computer to really test whether my USB ports are 1.0 or 2.0 ?? because i'm thinking maybe windows is playing tricks on me...

No i mean two tiny pins that have a very small black peice of plastic on them that you can manually pull off and put on.

These two pins will be somewhere on the motherboard itself. I might take a picture if i can find a broken motherboard in my room somewhere.

You need to get the datasheet on your motherboard, which you would do by searching the model, and datasheet or pdf in google.

Then you will have to look through it to find the jumpers that switch from 1.1 to 2.0, once you do that, switch depending on if there is already a black peice of plastic on there or not, put one on, or pull the one off.

I think it's unlikely that jumpers are set to 1.1 on a new mobo. Do you have the mobo drivers installed?

 it was really dumb but i figured it out.

Ben had the right idea of going to device manager and finding the devices that werent working properly. I did that, and it seems that the USB drivers werent even installed!! I had previously installed them with the CD that came with my mobo, but i guess when i unistalled the onboard audio, it must have wiped out the usb drivers for some reason. (onboard audio drivers and USB drivers were both on that asus mobo installation cd).

anyways, thanks guys.
