Zzounds: Tascam FW-1804 for $329!

Postby Rick Levine on Sat May 05, 2007 8:20 am

Either Zzounds has a misprint, or this an incredible sale. I already have one, and I just ordered another. I will now be able to record all 16 channels on my mixer. Awesome.

Musician's Friend says they're discontinued, but many other sites are still selling at the normal ~$500. I found one other site selling for $399. All other main stores were selling between $485 and $499.

I don't think it's a misprint though. Same Day Music has $330. It's got to be a sale.

This seems too good to be true, but I've got my order confirmation in hand: $329, no tax, free shipping. I'm psyched.

Quit tempting me!

If its being discontinued, don't expect Tascam to ever look back. :(

yeah i'm thinking that. But I don't imagine this units been selling well. I think the other two have been selling batter. This ones been dropping prices at places a while. I've seen it 400$ pretty regularly. Speaking of which I need to go get a FW card an test the 1082 out...

I think there is a lot of downward price pressure with all the new stuff coming out so cheap, like the Alesis io boxes. We'll see if the other 8x2+adat boxes drop too.

would it be resonable to say Tascam FW1804 is much better than the m audio delta 1010 using cubase sx 3? im mainly gonna do virtual studio with 2 hardware gear!

no its not reasonable to say. They are the same in terms of sound quality. The Tascam has more features, but the M-Audio kicks everythings butt in terms of drivers and compatibility. Put it this way there are very few computer systems a delta series will not work.

well how bout this which one would be a better buy? im sure the fw1804 runs perfectly fine on a windows xp intel with cubase sx.

basically $400 for the delta 1010?
or $330 for the fw1804?

also can u hook up 2 1804's and how would u do that?

ADAT. You hook them together VIA ADAT. the ADAT makes the 1804 a lot more expandable. But Theres still different interfaces. The delta1010, has a lot of things still going for it. In the respect that it works easy. A lot of the FW stuff you have to build your computer for Audio if you want it too work. The delta1010 will work in a lot of OEM Systems. and On a lot of slower machines. Try getting a Firepod to work on a 1500mhz Pentium 4 or Athlon, for most people its a headache at first. Also keep in mind you can run three delta1010s togetehr in one computer, just as long as you dont use protools M-Powered. Protools Mpowered only supports one interface. Still the Tascam is a very very very good deal. It has a lot more features and is a lot more expandable. The ADAT option and S/PIDF means you can upgrade to higherend Convertors which the M-Audio is limited too just too 2 channel convertors. Comparison wise the Tascam 1804 is better deal than an EMU1616M, or M-Audio FW1804. What I'm getting at here. is that though the Tascam 1804 has more stuff, quantity isn't quality. Sound quality in audio interfaces is negligible. The differences are small subtle if anything. You see minor improvements going to pro gear, but that difference in gear, in the hands of a good engineer is what seperates the best demos, from the major label pop songs. However in the prosumer gear class, Tascam, Motu, Presonus, M-Audio, EMU,TC electronics Konnekt, Mackie. The difference in sound quality between interfaces are so small, their not worth buying an interface on the grounds of better sound quality. Rather the Criteria for a good audio interface, should be reliable hardware, system compatibility (Some interfaces are just unusable because of poor drivers, great example a lot of Alesis stuff on Windows), and does it have the features you need. The Delta1010 for what it is, hands down, beats a lot of audio interfaces on the windows side because of compatibility and reliability. Feature yeah for 400$ it is kinda bare.. Sound quality, sure everyone else major is a bit better (there also about 3 or 4 years newer, with holding motu), but its a card with very few headaches, and is time tested and true. There are many owners of the M-Audio interfaces here, and I think very few are unhappy with their purchases.

I own tascam 1082 at the moment. I used to have the audiophile. I'm not bashing the Tascam. But I refuse to out right say that on grounds of features its better.

A delta 1010 works on 90% of PC's probably new on the market today (mac does not = PC in this example.)
