Why is the new Logic Studio so much cheaper than Logic Pro 7

Postby adurig on Wed Sep 12, 2007 1:03 pm

I guess I should just shut up and be happy, but I feel a bit confused. I have checked out as much as I can find about the new Logic Studio with Logic Pro 8, Mainstage, Soundtrack Pro 2, more and new instruments, tons more loops, etc. As a big fan and user of Logic Pro 7, I really like what I see in Logic Studio and Logic Pro 8. But why half the price?
- To draw new users?
- To get more market share?
- To move people off the PC?
- All of the above?
- Some other reason?

The obvious answer is "all of the above"! If you (as a company) already have all the various bits (separate apps) but perhaps are not selling heaps of any individual parts of this inventory, then why not put them all together, tidy up the package with a more accessable interface and workflow (this is where the work has been done - not creating anything new so it didn't cost so much to create and is so good that even people using other hardware/OS platforms think "Hmmm...I could justify changing to a Mac to use that baby! 8)

I would seriously consider this option if I was still on a Windows based system (which I was until relatively recently)

Thank you so much for asking that question. The same question was on my mind as well, but I didn't want to ask.

sounddiver

sounddiver in 2000 was the top editor/librarian program for hardware synths. a lightweight standalone version of the program had been bundled with a number of synths including jv/xp/xv synths from roland and many others.

sounddiver was written by Michael Haydn in Germany and taken over by Emagic. he worked for them as a programmer and i believe he is now an apple employee. apple/michael created an upgrade for SoundDiver to OSX a few years ago but it never really came out of beta. with logic pro 7 you could install it, but it's been very difficult to find since apple stopped selling the standalone product as emagic had.

why use sounddiver? it's the easiest graphical interface supporting the largest number of synths. it can import .SYX files saved through a number of applications, then allow you to name and keyword tag patches, and search for duplicates to delete. it allows you to demo sounds you're creating without having to load them into your synth by using cache memory. all in all, it's a wicked tool and of critical importance to hardware jockeys like myself who own a lot of synth hardware. apple, being in the software instrument game, cares not one lick for this product and so it has suffered the death of the forgotten.

17000+ messages. wow. the institutional knowledge of this product is phenomenal. you can even create "adaptations" for unsupported synths or midi mixers or controllers or effects devices to bind such hardware into your logic environment. if you want to call up patches from hardware synths within logic, sounddiver is the tool that makes it happen.
